Kitchens from The International Design and Architecture Awards 2013

Submitted by: Cochrane Design
Category: Kitchen - Over £25,000

Project Name: Victorian Townhouse Kitchen
Location: London
Interior Designer: Cochrane Design
Photgrapher: Paul Craig
Completion: Spring 2013

The brief was to create a kitchen that is functional, great for socialising and that also has a timeless elegance.

The starting point for the design was to open up the lower ground floor. This change to the layout was integral in creating the right atmosphere for entertaining on a large scale. Beneath the bespoke panelling and cabinetry lies the beating heart of a kitchen that would satisfy even the most demanding chefs. Tellingly the only appliances on display are the Wolf oven and hob, everything else is hidden in order not to detract from the aesthetic of the room. The panelled walls and doors hide a large fridge freezer and stacked laundry system as well as a secret toilet which is beautifully presented and every bit as luxurious as the rest of the property.

The classic panelling runs throughout the house creating continuity and a seamless transition between spaces. Colour has been used with great effect to break up the space. This also helps minimise the scale of the kitchen and designates different zones. At one end of the kitchen the space is dedicated to a stunning island with a sleek, thick Carrara marble work top and breakfast bar. Together with the floating shelves opposite these accentuate the balance that has been struck here between a contemporary and traditional aesthetic. The second, a continuation of the fantastic floor to ceiling storage draws you into a relaxed, inviting area. Whether alone or entertaining this kitchen has been designed to be an inviting and versatile space.

Project Name: Vero Beach Kitchen
Location: Vero Beach, Florida, USA
Interior Designer: Mick De Giulio for Kallista
Completion: March 2010

The kitchen is part of a newly constructed, ocean front property designed in a classic plantation/modern architectural style. It includes a connected living space with views to the sea.

The homeowners are both professionals, avid collectors of (mostly Asian) art. They wanted a comfortable style all of their own in this their second and eventual retirement home. One of the challenges was to create intimacy and comfort in a large, connected kitchen and family room space. A large island was designed for gathering and informal seating. Custom design elements include a signature refrigerator armoire in natural sucupira wood with crafted toe kick, reeded door details, and custom bronze hardware, a hood and back splash designed in the same limestone as the flooring material (the hood includes a custom piping bottom edge in polished stainless steel and the back splash includes a custom eglomise shell design), a custom pot filler sink with faucet valve on drawer face, and an island counter top in brushed granite with bronze end cap detail.
